1996-2002 3rd Gen 4Runner High Clearance Rear Bumper (HCB) - DIY Kit
If you want a great-looking, radically high-clearance, crawling-inspired rear bumper with clearance for 35s on your 3rd Gen 4Runner, this is it. Over two years of design and prototyping went into the EimKeith High Clearance Bumper (HCB) — this is version 11 — and it shows in the details.
The HCB mounts to the EimKeith weld-in rear crossmember, which ties the open frame rails together for strength (add one to your order in the options if you don’t already have it from the fuel tank relocation kit). From there, the bumper works with either the F-150 rear tank conversion or your stock tank in its original location — your call.
Design highlights:
- Receiver fully encased in the rear face with top-side pin access, maximizing departure angle
- Capped by the early 3rd Gen OEM running board plastic step cover (the Toyota-embossed one) for a clean transition to the hatch — no “block under the back of the truck” look
- Angled corner faces carry the hatch’s arc into the bumper and include mounting holes for the Rigid Industries IGNITE backup light kit (20641)
- Tapered just wider than the body — narrower than stock SR5 flares — for tight trail work
- Forward edges cut back and angled so you can fully stuff a 315 to the short factory bump stops (requires trimming the pinch weld on both sides)
- Recovery points machined from 1"-thick A36 steel with radiused holes for soft shackles, designed to carry the loaded weight of swing-out accessories
- Right-side exhaust hole to route the exhaust over the frame and behind (not under) the bumper
This is a DIY kit — it ships as individual pieces designed for the customer to assemble and weld on the truck: 3 major pre-formed pieces, 2 recovery points, and 5 smaller brackets, plus a pair of nut-straps and all installation hardware. It’s more or less self-aligning — the bumper can be bolted to the frame for fit-up before any welding happens.
You provide:
- A ~40.5" length of 2x2" tubing (welds in between the supplied bumper mounts)
- The receiver tube itself — modeled around the Buyers Products RT25806, trimmed to fit above the 2x2 and lengthwise under the bumper step
- The early 3rd Gen OEM running board step cover (trimming measurements provided)
- Auxiliary reverse lights, if you choose to run them
Select your configuration: the bumper is designed around a 1" body lift for maximum departure angle — choose the 1" Body Lift or No Body Lift version, and whether you need the rear crossmember. Welding required. Designed and built by EimKeith.
