3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro Grille Install
3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro Grille Step-By-Step Installation Guide: How to Install the TRD Pro Grille For the 2016-Present 3rd Gen Tacoma
With the rise of 3rd Gen Tacoma, it’s no surprise that people want to change it up. I, like many others, am not a fan of the stock 3rd Gen Tacoma grille.
The word on the street is that Toyota won’t sell you a TRD Pro grille unless you have a legit TRD Pro VIN number. Unless you got a great deal or paid a 10k “market adjustment,” chances are you don’t have that VIN number.
So, we decided to source our own Tacoma grilles. After some searching, and a couple of failures, we finally got some grilles that fit and have the quality we would expect on a $35,000 truck.

Tacoma TRD Pro Grille Step-By-Step Install:
We figured we would show you how to install it just in case you didn’t know. Maybe you do, and want to see the not so pros do it first, before you dive in.
Step 1. Removing Stock Tacoma Grille
Pop your hood open, and you will notice these two Philips head bolts or 10mm. But, if you’re like us, you can’t find the 10mm, so we used a screwdriver.
Step 2. Remove Plastic Tabs on Either Side of Grill Shell
After you get both screws out, you will see a plastic tab on both sides of the grille shell.
You’ll need to pop these up with a small flat head screwdriver but be careful as they are easy to break.
Unplug TSS Harness From Sensor (2018+ Models Only)
If you have a 2018 or newer, you’ll need to unplug your TSS harness from your sensor. Not to worry, as you’ll be able to plug it right back in on the new grille without having to recalibrate it.
Step 3. Release Grille From Plastic Tabs & Remove
Now, you can gently lift your grille up and out from the tabs. Being careful in all four corners to remove it from any obstructions and clips.
The grille should come out pretty easily after this, and then you can lay it flat on a table upside down to start removing the stock grille.
Installing New TRD Pro Grille
Once you get the Stock grille out, it’s time to put in the pro grille. We chose to go with black Toyota letters, instead of the common silver.
Step 4. Place New Grill in Factory Shell
Putting the new grille in your factory shell is super simple, just simply pop the tabs in on your old grille and set the new grille down in its place.
Now we just gently press the new grille into the shell making sure all the tabs lock-in.
Step 5. Reinstall New Grille on Tacoma
Now that our new grille is securely in place, we can repeat the same process we used to uninstall the grill to reinstall it.
Make sure if you have a TSS sensor in a 2018 or newer you plug back in your sensor to avoid any dash lights and error codes.
End Results & Final Thoughts
This install only took us about 30 minutes from start to finish and if you have some basic tools it will be a breeze for anyone. Check out the 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro Grille on the Yotamafia shop.
